Impingement Syndrome or Painful Arc usually affects people in their middle age.
The most common symptom of impingement syndrome is sudden shoulder pain when lifting the arm.
This pain is brought on by lifting the arm, and is often worse at night, especially if the patient is lying on the affected shoulder.
The problem can occur where there's inflammation around the supraspinatus tendon where it passes through a bony arch to attach to the upper arm.
This shoulder pain can be caused by various things, such as overuse, injury or bad posture - where the neck and shoulders drop forwards.
Treatment depends on the severity of the condition. Osteopathy can help with Shoulder Impingement, but if the condition is chronic, an operation may be required.
